I can't believe it! A house aroung the corner from me has got its Christmas tree all lit up in its window and the panes have got bells and snowflakes frosted onto them.
We're not even half way through November. Did they use it to launch their fireworks from?
There are some houses round here with the lights lit up (notice I didn't say "put up" as they've been up all year)
Good grief! It'll be starting in July soon.
its not far off round my way the local department store had a big xmas display up and running at the end of august
how wrong is that
Saw a big scary singing santa in Asda today.
Well I expect the shops to start early, though August is abombinably early, but normally the domestic stuff waits until December the 1st at least.
I put mine up on Christmas eve (or as close to as poss) and can't even manage 12 days. By new year I'm sick of 'em (and sick of plucking the cats out of the tree and sweeping up the broken baubles)
Not that I'm bah humbug or anything (Two pieces of coal Cratchit? Are you taking the piss?) I just can't maintain one celebration for two months.
As an old Humbug, and someone who reads the Holy books so I can argue the toss, All I can say is
Jeremiah 10 verses 1 to 5
Heavens to Bestsy! I thought Christmas trees came from pagan religions and were based on the green man and withcraft. I didn't realise they got a mention in the Old Testament.
And if we're not supposed to take any note of signs in the sky, why the star of Bethlehem?
Good reference!
well thats the problem with the Bible, it was writen by comitee, some 50 years after the events. and is therefore like a government booklet on policy, what it says on page 1 will be contradicted on page 2 underlined on page 3 and by time it gets to page 6 forgoten about totaly.
I agree with that, also you can interpret it differently from different translations.
I'm trying to slowly read through the whole bible myself. I'm about 1/3 way through the old Testament at the moment
I waded through the old testament many years ago, to be honest I quite enjoyed it as a read (sorry, non-believer) but I did find all the begating in Genisis 5 and 11 a bit tedious. A real shame as 5 has the flood story in it if I remember.
And following on from Bungle, here are those verse (King James) - excellent reference Bungle
|
Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: |
|
Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. |
|
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe |
|
They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move |
|
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. |
which suggest to me (Nurse When) that only the heathens should be afraid of the star and that true believers should be Ok with it?
